If you are a first timer to Manhattan I still highly suggest you drive to Staten Island and take the Ferry over, since it is free and a cool ride. We never had a problem finding empty spots there either though we mostly travel on weekends. Just bring your hand sanitizer as always to fight the germs from all the people and surfaces you will touch.
